The YMCA of San Diego County is proud to have Y skaters at the 2024 Paris Olympics this year!

Bryce Wettstein - Women's Skateboarding

Bryce Wettstein, 22, began her skateboarding career at age 5 at Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. She is the 2019 USA National Champion for Women's Park format and competed for Team USA Skateboarding in 2019 and 2020. She placed sixth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and was one of the recipients of the Tokyo 2020 Fair Play Award. Wettstein placed fifth at the 2022 Park World Championships. The Encinitas native loves to surf, play volleyball and write songs on her ukulele. "Skateboarding," she says "allows me to bring out the best parts of myself and has become a part of my soul."

Wettstein speaks fondly of her time skating at the YMCA. As she started travelling for skate competitions and spending less time at home, in 2022 she generously donated her personal Olympic training skate ramp from her backyard to our skate park. Now other kids learn enjoy this great ramp and grow in the sport at our Y, just like she did!

Bryce will be competing between July 24 and August 6 at 3:30pm (PST) in her second Olympic Games. View her Team USA bio here.

TATE CAREW - Men's Skateboarding

Point Loma native Tate Carew is a member of the USA Men's Skateboarding National Team and the No. 1 park skater in the world. His accomplishments include placing sixth in the 2024 World Skate Park Tour in Dubai, third in the 2023 World Skate Park Championships in Rome, first in the 2023 Tony Hawk Vert Alert, fourth in the 2023 World Skate Park Tour in Argentina, fifth in the 2023 X Games in Japan Vert and sixth in 2023 World Skate Championship in UAE.

Tate credits his success to the skaters he met growing up in San Diego, including those at "Clairemont Skatepark" — the local nickname for our very own Mission Valley YMCA Krause Family Skate and Bike Park. They helped him become the skater he is today (Watch the full video here). Tate took the men's park crown at the Olympic Qualifier Series Shanghai and is on his way to the 2024 Olympic Games.

Tate will compete in his first Olympic Games between July 24 at 3:30pm (PST) and August 6 for the finals. View his Team USA bio here.
