Gymnastics Recital

A Sweet Performance • March 21 • 3:00 pm

Invite your family and friends, to come watch. Participants will learn a routine to perform in front of everyone on March 21. We will be doing a raffle for free leotards and private lessons. There will also be food for sale, as well as performances by our competitive team. Dress rehearsal will be held on March 20.

La Jolla Lightning YMCA Swim Team

Strong Swimmers, Confident Kids • Multiple Dates and Times Available

The La Jolla Lightning Swim Team (LJ Lightning) is a competitive swim team that strives to provide the best opportunity for kids to achieve success in and out of the pool. With a focus on team building, the coaches are committed to providing each swimmer with an environment that fosters personal growth, goal development and team unity. The LJ Lightning offers a complete program for all ages and level from beginning development swimmers to swimmers who are committed and striving for USA swimming time standards and success. Any swimmer interested in joining swim team must set up a time to do swim evaluation with the Head Coach to determine which group on the swim team will be the bets fit for them. The swimmer must have knowledge and ability to perform all 4 competitive strokes for 25 yerads: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Students will learn how to run, vault, flip, climb, and roll over obstacles. The goal of these classes will be to teach students how to safely maneuver through their environment in a fun and creative way.

No matter your child's age of interest, we have a fun and engaging program for it that focuses on teamwork, friendly competition, athletics and encouragement.

Our multi-sport programs promote fitness by providing an introduction to a wide variety of sports, games and a variety of enrichment activities while emphasizing character values and sportsmanship.

Dan McKinney Family YMCA leads the way in youth basketball! Our league is designed for all players from beginner to advanced skill levels. Players will be coached on the rules and strategies of the game in practice and in play. Teams are coached and supported by parent volunteers and YMCA staff with an emphasis on equal participation and sportsmanship.

Teen Programs

Model United Nations Program

Gain Real Life Experience • January - May

The California YMCA Youth and Government Model United Nations program is a simulation of the “real-life” United Nations Assembly.  Participants in the Model United Nations (MUN) will take part in some of the activities that the real U.N. participates in.  Ambassadors will research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions focusing on international issues, including disputes between countries, peace keeping responsibilities, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with hunger, disease and poverty. There will be an informational meeting on January 6 at the Dan McKinney Family YMCA at 6:30 pm.

Yoga 101

Find Your Zen • February 29 - March 21

Join Theresa Spangle, Director of Health and Wellness at Dan McKinney Family YMCA in a special four week workshop to learn the basics of Yoga. Get set up for success by learning more about various poses, the purpose for them and how to practice them. The workshop is beginner friendly or a great opportunity for veteran yogis to expand their knowledge. Every session will be part lecture and part movement based, so come prepared to move!

  • Week 1: Movements of the spine
  • Week 2: Hips and hamstrings for back health
  • Week 3: Shoulders and posture
  • Week 4: Breath, meditation and gear

Building More Than Muscle • Private sessions by appointment

Benefit from focused attention, hands-on alignment, coaching and adjustments to ensure your yogic experience meets your individual needs! Your instructor will focus on teaching you the fundamentals of common postures and yogic breathing techniques, and answer any questions you have. A private session also offers the perfect introduction to yoga or if you are returning to yoga and want to learn special modifications and techniques that you can apply to your practice in class and at home. Hayashi-Ha Family Karate

Learn Self-Defense • Appointments Available Daily

Hayashi-ha Karate is traditional Japanese karate-do classes taught by certified members of Japan Hayashi-ha Shito-ryukai with over 20 years of experience. Perfect for all all ages, Hayashi-ha teaches fighting basics such as punches, kicks and blocks, Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring), stretching, strength conditioning, self-defense techniques, as well as games and other activities.

Classes are divided into two groups:

Beginner/Novice Class for white through purple belts of all ages. 

  • Intermediate/Advanced Class for green through black of all ages as well. 

All new students are required to attend the beginner/novice class until they meet the requirements of the instructor to attend the intermediate/advanced class.
