THIS WEEK'S THEME:
PIRATES
Arrgh Maties! Yo-ho-ho we've got some Pirate news for you this week! While we are land-locked — we be using our sea legs to navigate through some fun activities and games, and shiver me timbers, we might discover a yummy treasure!
WHAT KIND OF PIRATE ARE YOU?
HOLD YOUR PLANK!
This is a fun challenge for your whole crew! Set a timer and see how long your fellow pirate can hold a plank. For a bonus challenge, add a shoulder tap while holding plank.
- Swabby: Modified plank — start on your knees and lean forward with arms stacked under your shoulders.
- Peg Leg: Full plank with arms bent at 90-degree angle
- Sea Wolf: Full plank — extending your arms underneath shoulders.
WILL YOU FLINCH?
Tabatha V. from McGrath Family YMCA teaches you how to play "Flinch" — an easy game you can do outside with your friends or family. Watch this video to learn the game, and submit your video for a chance to be featured on our social channels!

TRIVIA
- Pirates DID wear eye patches. It’s been said that pirates wore eye patches to help keep one eye adjusted to night vision for seeing below deck.
- Pirates did not always bury their treasure. Some pirates did not bury their treasure right away because they wanted their share of the loot beforehand. In addition, a pirate’s treasure did not always include gold or silver; most of it was food, lumber, cloth, and animal hides.
ARE YE SEAWORTHY MATEY?
A prepared pirate needs to be a strong swimmer because you never know when you'll hear, "Abandon ship, mateys!"
Seriously, though, knowing how to swim and be safe around water is one of the most important skills a person can learn. May is National Water Safety Month, and you can practice your skills at home using the YMCA's guide to swim activities at home.
