Our Y History
Cooperation between La Jolla Optimists, Dutch Smith Pool Association, La Jolla Youth Inc., and the YMCA resulted in a new building in 1964, originally known as the Northwest YMCA, serving the communities of La Jolla, Clairemont, University City and Pacific Beach. The original facilities included a swimming pool, youth center and administration. Within the first 5 years of opening its doors, the Northwest YMCA constructed a memorial gymnasium and four tennis courts. In 1976, the Northwest YMCA constructed handball/racquetball courts, a weight room, and locker rooms to better meet the needs of the physical education facility at the time.
Over the next decade, services expanded to include child care, camp and our Y community grew to over 2,000 members. In 1986 the Northwest YMCA changed its name to the La Jolla YMCA and a year later, added the Firehouse facility for teen and senior programs. A new group exercise studio and gymnasium were added in the early 2000s. In 2017, the facility was renamed the Dan McKinney Family YMCA and new construction was completed for an aquatic center, community rooms, wellness center, recreation field and locker rooms.
Currently, the McKinney YMCA impacts over 25,000 individuals per year through membership, aquatics, child care programs, gymnastics, sports and more. We regularly welcome over 2,000 people at our facility every day.
Please join us in celebrating the growth and impact over the last 6 decades by attending our 60th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Dan McKinney Family YMCA.
