Inspire Our Future Help Send Kids to Camp

Inspire Our Future, Send Kids to Camp headerFrom the north, east, south and west, our parents are telling our story for us!

"The most important factor in our child's ability to attend is financial assistance from the YMCA."
– Dan McKinney Family YMCA (La Jolla)

"The YMCA changed my child's life. He has ADHD and the Y was a great change to his life."
– Cameron Family YMCA (Santee)

"My kids needed to get out of the house and socialize with other children. They had so much fun running around, making friends, crafting and just being kids! Thank you!"
– South Bay Family YMCA (Chula Vista)

"I can't thank you enough for this. My child is so happy again to be with kids. We are essential workers at a local hospital and this is saving our family. Thank you!"
– T. Claude and Gladys B. Ryan Family YMCA (Point Loma)

But the story isn't about us, it’s about YOU and people like you. Last year we asked our Y family to help us create day camp opportunities during a worldwide pandemic. It was a time when our doors were closed, our staff cut in half and we were learning to juggle ever-changing challenges. We will be forever grateful for the outpouring of generosity; including our Y members who continued to pay their membership fees even when our doors were closed.

It was because of our Y family, along with a partnership with The San Diego Foundation, that our YMCA was one of the first organizations in San Diego trusted to offer day camp during the pandemic. We were honored to open child care and day camp locations across San Diego County for essential workers; and as government guidelines allowed, provide half and full day academic enrichment programs for kids (a remote learning and day camp hybrid). Suddenly, there were squeals and giggles and high fives at our Ys again!

Today, YMCA summer day and overnight camps are back, and we couldn't be more excited! A total of 13 Y locations including Camp Surf will host a variety of day camps; and our overnight Camps Marston and Raintree will welcome kids as early as June for week-long adventures — and YES we'll have horses at Raintree Ranch for our young wranglers!

Our Y will continue to work with officials and experts on protective measures to ensure a safe environment for all. So, while camp may look different this year, we are looking forward to providing the same amazing camp experience for our kids. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a sense of success and achievement. Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help and try new things. The camp experience translates back in real-world experience — in an "I can" attitude.

At the Y, we advocate for our young people. We promote opportunities and provide experiences for kids that serve as an antidote for the world's challenges. And I’m sure we can all agree, our kids need and deserve this opportunity — now more than ever!

We know that you will do what you can to join us in sending deserving kids to camp in 2021!

Together, we're helping families like these from the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA (Southeast San Diego):

“I'm thankful for camp. I'm an essential worker and camp has been a blessing for my family in these hard times. I don't have anybody else to take care of my kids. I'm a single parent and my kids attend camp in order for me to attend my work.”
“It gives my children hope. They need to be out of the house. I'm grateful that they were able to go to camp.”
