What We’re Seeing

Safe access to nature is essential to children’s health, learning, and well-being, but not all communities have equal access.

In San Diego, environmental conditions like the Tijuana River pollution crisis can restrict safe outdoor experiences, affecting families and youth who rely on coastal spaces and outdoor programs.

When barriers like cost, transportation, equipment, or unsafe conditions limit outdoor access, children miss out on experiences that build confidence, connection, and lifelong stewardship.

THE Y'S ROLE

At the Y, we create meaningful outdoor experiences that support growth, belonging, and well-being through day camps, resident camp, environmental education, and ocean-based programs like YMCA Camp Surf.

We also partner with community leaders and coalitions like the Tijuana River Coalition to protect safe access to outdoor spaces and advocate for solutions that reduce environmental and economic barriers  — so more children and families can benefit from the physical, emotional, and developmental benefits of nature.

OUR VISION FOR change

FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH

All children and youth should have repeated, meaningful, safe access to the outdoors to help improve health outcomes, promote self-confidence in new experiences, and foster a love and understanding for the environment.

FOR FAMILIES

Families should have access to safe, affordable recreational experiences outdoors. Barriers like fees, transportation, equipment, and facilitation should be reduced whenever possible.

FOR PROFESSIONALS

Environmental educators should have access to ongoing training in Positive Youth Development, family engagement, and environmental curriculum that aligns with Next Generation Science Standards.

FROM INSIGHTS TO IMPACT

We pair on-the-ground experience with meaningful data to share what’s working, elevate community voice, and inform policies that and inform policies that expand access to meaningful outdoor experiences for all.
