Free E-Bike Safety Courses

Giving Young riders the skills to stay safe

E-bikes give teens a convenient way to get to school, activities, jobs and friends’ houses, but safe riding requires knowledge of traffic rules and road safety.

That’s why we’re partnering with Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer’s office, the San Diego Bicycle Coalition and Scripps Health to offer free youth bike safety courses for riders ages 12–16 at multiple YMCA locations.

This hands-on, three-hour course goes beyond the classroom, giving participants the chance to practice real-world riding skills with certified cycling instructors.

Youth will learn how to:

  • Ride safely and predictably in traffic
  • Recognize potential hazards
  • Stay aware of their surroundings
  • Build confidence on the road

Through a combination of instruction, skills practice and supervised riding, participants can apply what they learn in a supportive environment. The course is open to both traditional bicycle and e-bike riders. For e-bike riders, please ensure the bike is a legal pedal-equipped model that complies with California law for riders under age 16.

Every participant will receive a free e-bike-rated helmet provided by Scripps Health.

HOW TO SIGN UP

  • Parents should register using their own name and contact information, as a parent or guardian will be required to sign a waiver at check-in.
  • Parents do not need to stay for the class, but a parent or guardian must arrive by 12:40pm to sign their child in and complete a required San Diego Bicycle Coalition waiver.
  • Participants must bring their own bicycle and should be comfortable riding independently. This is not a learn-to-ride course.
  • Bikes should be in good working order and ready to ride.
  • Due to limited space and high demand, registration is limited to one child per family.
  • Please register only if your child can attend. If plans change, let us know as soon as possible so another family can participate.
