Build Resilience

All children face challenges throughout their upbringing that can range from minor disappointments to traumatic experiences. YMCA Youth & Family Services works with youth to develop coping skills to manage these trials and overcome them successfully. Here are a few tips that can help develop resilience in children.

  • BE POSITIVE: Children will learn from your ability to cope with difficult situations. Model a positive “I can do it” attitude, even when times are tough.
  • BUILD CONFIDENCE: Compliment your child on what he/she does well. Point out important qualities such as compassion, honesty, and persistence.
  • ENCOURAGE RELATIONSHIPS: A strong, loving support system is proven to be critical in the life of a child. Create connections between young ones so that friendships thrive and children can rely on each other for support.
  • USE CHALLENGES AS LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES: Tough times are the best chance for a child to learn and grow. Resist the urge to solve a child’s problem and instead instill confidence in his/her ability to handle it.
  • TEACH SELF-CARE: Part of the ability to cope comes with maintaining personal health. Make sure children are eating well, getting enough sleep, and the right amount of physical activity.
  • HELP OTHERS: Empower your children by providing them opportunities to give back. Age-appropriate community work can be a great way for children to step outside of their own challenges and focus on helping someone else.
