Community Resilience at Jackie Robinson Family YMCA

In the wake of the recent record-breaking storm that flooded many Southeast San Diego neighborhoods, we've witnessed both the devastation and the remarkable spirit of resilience that defines us as a community. Staff and volunteers at Jackie Robinson Family YMCA are working together alongside the community to provide services and aid those affected by the damage. 

Community Support

Since the onset of the flooding on January 22, 2024, Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has been a beacon of hope for the Southeast San Diego community, providing much-needed resources and support. As a convener, connector and unifier, our Y has opened its doors for individuals to find some normalcy through the simple comfort of a hot shower and providing mental health services for families in need. The Y has distributed 325 hotel vouchers for 240 adults and 85 children. It has become a central meeting place for partners to convene and orchestrate relief efforts and has served as a pivotal drop-off location for generous donations.

Now, as the community begins to knit itself back together, thanks to the tireless work of many nonprofits and local government agencies, our Y is grateful to begin transitioning its focus. Continuing our nurturing role, we are guiding individuals toward the leading organizations specializing in disaster recovery, ensuring every person affected by the flooding is supported and directed towards the expertise that aligns with their unique needs.

Mental Health Support

Recognizing the toll that such disasters can take on mental well-being, the YMCA's Community Support Services is providing onsite mental health services for everybody. It's crucial to remember healing extends beyond the physical, and the Y is committed to supporting the well-being of the community. For mental health support, please email [email protected]. We encourage everyone to use these resources and connect with the support needed.

Support and Resources

For those in need of additional support, resources are available. Below is a comprehensive list of resources, including counseling services, shelter information, and disaster relief assistance. We encourage everyone affected to utilize these resources and know that help is available:

  1. The San Diego Inclement Weather Shelter Program has been activated. People experiencing homelessness can show up directly at the locations to gain access to a bed. For a list of locations, visit the Inclement Weather Shelter Program webpage.
  2. For the latest emergency updates visit www.alertsandiego.org and download the San Diego Emergency app.
  3. If you are affected by the storms and need to speak with someone by phone about shelters, road closures, and other non-emergency disaster-related services, please call 211. If you’re hearing impaired, dial 711 and ask to be connected to (858) 300-1211.

  6. Sandbags are also available in limited supply and can be picked up at 10 recreation centers centrally located in each City Council district. Learn more.
  7. Shelters are located nearby. The County worked with the Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties to open storm shelters for people displaced from their homes. San Diego Humane Society is onsite to support pets. Shelter locations are found at:
